Decision Guide

Embroidery or patches for uniforms? Embroider the shirt, patch the shell and the name.

Choose direct embroidery for polos, button-down work shirts, caps, and most jackets: it lasts the life of the garment and reads as a finished uniform. Choose sewn patches for heavy or waterproof outerwear, for name labels on garments that get reassigned, and where an FR-rated patch is the approved route. Iron-on patches do not belong on a uniform. Most Las Vegas crews use both, decided garment by garment.

The Buyer's Read

Where each one wins, and the mistakes to avoid.

Direct embroidery stitches the logo into the fabric. On a knit polo, a twill work shirt, or a structured cap it produces a clean chest mark that survives hundreds of washes and never lifts at the edge. That is why it is the default for uniform programs and why the embroidery service page is where most Las Vegas uniform orders start. The one-time digitizing fee sets up the stitch file; after that, per-piece cost tracks stitch count.

Patches earn their place on garments embroidery struggles with. Quilted, insulated, or waterproof shells can pucker or lose their water resistance under a dense embroidery field; a sewn patch sits on top without penetrating the membrane. Rental-style programs use patches because garments move between wearers, and a name patch can be unpicked and replaced. If your crews turn over and you reassign shirts, a sewn name patch with an embroidered company logo is a sensible split.

Flame-resistant and hi-vis garments follow one rule regardless of method: decorate only within the manufacturer's guidance, using FR-rated thread or patches where required. Bighorn confirms the guidance before quoting; see the NFPA 70E embroidery guide and the ANSI 107 hi-vis guide.

Two mistakes cost crews money every year. The first is iron-on or adhesive patches on anything that will see a commercial washer; they let go within weeks. The second is a low-cost patch with a bordered, rental-look emblem on a customer-facing polo, which undercuts a brand that paid for good garments. If the point of the uniform is to look like a company, embroider it.

On hats the choice is style as much as durability: leather, woven, and PVC patches have become a look of their own, and the custom hats page quotes patch caps alongside direct embroidery. For the rest of the program, see custom uniforms in Las Vegas and custom work shirts.

FAQ

Embroidery vs patch questions, answered.

Is embroidery or a patch better for work uniforms?

Direct embroidery for polos, button-down work shirts, caps, and most jackets: it lasts the life of the garment and looks like a uniform, not a rental. Patches for heavy or waterproof outerwear, for name labels on garments that get reassigned, and for FR programs where an approved FR patch is easier than direct embroidery within the manufacturer's guidance. Most Las Vegas crews use both by garment.

Which is cheaper, embroidery or patches?

At small and mid quantities, direct embroidery is usually cheaper per piece because there is no separate patch to buy and then sew on. At very high volume with one logo on many garment types, a patch can be cheaper because one patch run serves everything. The digitizing fee for embroidery is one-time and small relative to the program.

Do patches hold up in the wash?

A well-made woven or embroidered patch sewn on all the way around holds up well. Iron-on or adhesive patches do not survive industrial laundering and should not be used on uniforms. Direct embroidery does not have an edge to lift.

Can I put a patch on an FR shirt?

Only an FR-rated patch applied within the garment manufacturer's guidance, and the same applies to direct embroidery on FR garments. The employer and safety professional own the PPE selection. See the NFPA 70E embroidery guide.

Should employee names be embroidered or on a patch?

If garments get reassigned when crews change, a sewn name patch can be swapped. If garments stay with the employee, direct name embroidery looks cleaner. Many programs embroider the company logo and patch the name.

What about leather or PVC patches on hats?

Patch caps are a style choice for merch and crews alike. Leather, woven, and PVC patches are quoted alongside direct cap embroidery on the custom hats page.
