Bulwark FR Shirts: What Works in Vegas Heat

The dual-rated FR base shirt that handles Vegas commercial electrical and mechanical work without overcooking the crew in summer.

Why Bulwark Is the Industry Standard

Bulwark Excel-FR has been the dominant FR base layer in commercial electrical and oil/gas crews for decades. The reasons are practical: dual-rated certification covers both arc-flash and flash-fire hazards in a single garment, the cotton-nylon blend feels closer to a standard work shirt than other FR fabrics, and the durability through industrial laundry programs is well-documented. Most Vegas safety officers spec Bulwark by default unless there's a specific reason to deviate.

Key Bulwark SKUs for Vegas Crews

SLU2 Excel-FR ComforTouch (button-down work shirt)

The flagship base shirt. 6.5 oz cotton-nylon blend, NFPA 70E CAT 2 (8 cal/cm²) and NFPA 2112 dual-rated. Available short or long sleeve, in trade-standard colors (postman blue, charcoal, navy). Most-ordered FR base for commercial electrical, mechanical, and oil/gas.

PEW2 Excel-FR Pant

The matching FR work pant. Pair with the SLU2 shirt for full NFPA 70E Class 2 PPE coverage. Same fabric weight, same ComforTouch hand. Standard for journeymen working medium-voltage electrical.

CT11 Excel-FR Long-Sleeve Henley

FR knit henley used as a base layer or worn solo on warmer days. Lighter-feeling than the woven SLU2; popular for service techs working residential and light commercial.

JLR8 Excel-FR Hi-Vis Class 3 Jacket

Combination FR + ANSI 107 Class 3 hi-vis jacket. The dual-compliance solution for crews working near vehicle traffic at night — utility crews, road work, and night-shift commercial mechanical. Eliminates the layering compromise of an FR shirt + non-FR hi-vis vest.

CLB6 / LFR6 FR Coveralls

Full-coverage NFPA 2112 coveralls for oil/gas, process work, and industrial mechanical. Standard for pipefitters and turnaround crews. See our piece on oil, gas, and mechanical contractors for the full coverall context.

Vegas-Specific Fit and Heat Considerations

FR fabric is heavier than standard cotton or poly work shirts because the protective fabric weight is what stops thermal transfer. The lighter the fabric, the lower the protection. The 6.5 oz Excel-FR is the lightest dual-rated option that hits CAT 2 — heavier-weight FR (9 oz canvas) provides more protection but gets shed by 11 AM in Vegas summer because crews can't physically work in it past mid-morning.

For most Vegas commercial work — switchgear up to 600V, mechanical service, and pipefitting — the SLU2 + PEW2 combination is the right balance of protection and wearability. Higher cal-rated environments (substation work, utility transmission) require multi-layer FR systems regardless of comfort.

Embroidering Bulwark FR

Decoration on FR garments is where most catalog suppliers compromise the rating. NFPA 70E and Bulwark's published decoration guidelines require:

  • FR-compatible thread. Nomex (aramid) is the standard. Standard polyester melts in arc events and voids the rating.
  • Approved placements. Left chest, optional right chest, optional sleeve. No oversized back logos that change protective fabric area.
  • Documented certification. Each FR run should ship with a certification sheet documenting the thread spec used.

For deeper context see NFPA 70E FR shirt compliance.

Bulwark vs Carhartt FR vs Wrangler Riggs FR

  • Bulwark — industry standard, most-spec'd by safety officers, durable through laundry, slightly more institutional aesthetic.
  • Carhartt FR Lightweight — softer hand, more popular with crews who reject heavier FR, comparable ratings. Often the second choice when crews push back on Bulwark.
  • Wrangler Riggs FR — button-down work-shirt styling, dual-rated, less common in commercial Vegas but well-regarded for crews who want a "regular work shirt" aesthetic.

All three accept FR-safe Nomex thread embroidery. We carry all three on Bighorn FR programs.
