Custom Embroidered Hoodies & Sweatshirts: A Buyer's Guide

A working buyer's guide to embroidered hoodies for crew programs, branded swag, and pre-dawn 5 AM Vegas starts.

When Custom Hoodies Make Sense

For trades and contractor crews, hoodies fill a specific role:

  • Cool desert mornings. Pre-dawn 5 AM starts in Vegas summer (mandated by Nevada heat-stress guidance) need a layer crews shed by 8 AM. A branded hoodie is that layer.
  • Winter desert work. 38° at 6 AM in Pahrump in January isn't unusual. A heavyweight cotton-poly hoodie covers the cold mornings without the cost of a full insulated jacket.
  • Crew swag programs. Holiday gifts, milestone rewards, anniversary gear — branded hoodies are perennially popular and crews actually wear them off the clock.
  • Trade show and event crews. Industry events, AGC dinners, ribbon cuttings — a sharp branded zip-up hoodie hits a different note than a polo.

The Hoodie Blanks That Matter

Carhartt SUP01 Midweight Hooded Sweatshirt — the workhorse

Heavyweight 10.5 oz cotton-poly fleece. The default for trade and construction crews — durable enough to survive a working environment, takes embroidery cleanly, available in colors that match most brand palettes. Slightly more expensive than the budget options but the durability difference is real.

Independent Trading IND4000 Heavyweight Hooded Sweatshirt — premium

12 oz cotton-poly fleece, slightly heavier and more expensive than the Carhartt SUP01. Streetwear-leaning fit, very popular with younger crew members and brands that want a "premium giveaway" feel. Embroiders cleanly.

Champion S700 Powerblend Eco — athletic feel

Lighter weight (9 oz) than the Carhartt or Independent options, with a more athletic cut and a distinct softer hand. The right pick for crews who don't want the heavy trade-style hoodie look. Slightly higher cost than Gildan but lower than Carhartt.

Gildan 18500 Heavy Blend — budget

The budget option for high-volume crew programs where per-piece cost dominates. 8 oz cotton-poly, embroiders fine, lasts well for the price. The default at 50+ piece runs where margins matter.

Decoration: Embroidery vs Screen Printing on Hoodies

The decoration choice depends on what you're decorating where.

Chest logos: embroider

Embroidered chest logos on hoodies look premium and last as long as the hoodie itself. Screen-printed chest logos crack at the fold lines (around the body) over time as the fleece flexes. For chest-only programs, embroidery is the right call almost universally.

Full-back designs: screen print

Embroidery doesn't scale to a full-back design — the stitch count and machine time make it cost-prohibitive. Screen printing is the standard for back logos, full-back designs, and any wraparound graphic. Pair a screen-printed back with an embroidered chest logo for a complete program.

Sleeve hits: embroider

Sleeve hits (forearm or upper arm) embroider cleanly. Common for trade-local affiliations, certifications, or secondary brand marks.

What Custom Embroidered Hoodies Cost

Per-piece cost is driven by the same five factors as embroidered shirts: stitch count, blank cost, digitizing fee, decoration complexity, and quantity. Hoodie blanks cost more than tee blanks but the embroidery is comparable, so the per-piece cost is mostly driven by the blank choice.

Bulk discounts kick in at 24+ pieces and again at 144+. For crews of 12-24, expect comparable per-piece pricing across blanks because volume discounts haven't kicked in.

Hoodies in a Crew Program

A typical crew package allocates 1 hoodie per employee per year — enough for the cool morning rotation, replaced when worn out. For trade-show and event crews, additional hoodies in special colorways or premium blanks signal the event.

For larger operations, hoodies are managed through a company store with employee allowances and direct shipping. Common pattern: a standard hoodie included in the new-hire kit, replacement available on the company store after the first year.
