Apprentice & Journeyman Uniforms: Differentiation in Crew Programs
A working playbook on visual differentiation in apprenticeship programs — IBEW, UA, ironworkers, merit shops, and how Vegas trade contractors mark training level via apparel.

Why Apprentice/Journeyman Differentiation Exists
Three reasons drive visual level marking in trade crews:
- Safety. An apprentice in year 1 doesn't know what they don't know. Marking them visually reminds journeymen and foremen to check their work, supervise on critical tasks, and pull them off jobs that exceed their training.
- Training pace. A foreman walking the floor can scan year-1 apprentices and assign appropriate tasks instantly. No awkward "what level are you?" conversation.
- Respect. Journeyman cards take 4-5 years of apprenticeship plus licensing exams to earn. Visual recognition matters — both for the journeyman and as motivation for the apprentice climbing the ladder.
Union Apprenticeship Programs in Vegas
The major Vegas union locals run formal apprenticeship programs with apparel guidelines:
- IBEW Local 357 — Las Vegas electrical workers, 5-year JATC apprenticeship program with FR-shirt mandatory once apprentices hit live-circuit work.
- UA Local 525 — Vegas plumbing and pipefitting, 5-year apprenticeship with welder qualification on the path.
- Iron Workers Local 433 — Vegas/Reno ironworkers, 4-year apprenticeship with structural and reinforcing tracks.
- Sheet Metal Workers Local 88 — Vegas SMACNA work, HVAC and architectural sheet metal apprenticeship.
Each local publishes apprenticeship handbooks that specify or recommend apparel — typically embroidered company logo plus year designation. Contractor signatory shops match these standards in their crew programs.
Three Standard Differentiation Patterns
1. Year-Level Embroidery
"APPRENTICE Y1" through "APPRENTICE Y5" stitched on the right chest, company logo on the left. Year updates annually. The foreman scans the chest, knows the level instantly. Once the apprentice completes the program and earns their card, the shirt changes to "JOURNEYMAN" or stays clean (logo only).
2. Sleeve Stripe System
One embroidered stripe per year of apprenticeship — military-style sleeve markings. Year-1 apprentice has one stripe, year-5 has five, journeyman has none (or a different mark like a star). Visible from a distance and from the side.
3. Color Hierarchy
Apprentices wear lighter shirt color (gray, light blue), journeymen wear company brand color (navy, black). Master-level wears a third tier (gold, white). Hard hat color matches: green for apprentices, white for journeymen and above.
Merit Shop Adaptations
Non-union shops use the same logic with different titles. Common Vegas service-trade tier programs:
- Plumbing/HVAC service: Helper → Tech 1 → Tech 2 → Lead Tech → Master Tech
- Electrical service: Apprentice → Journeyman → Master → Foreman
- Roofing crews: Helper → Roofer → Lead Roofer → Foreman
- Concrete: Laborer → Finisher → Lead Finisher → Foreman
Each tier gets distinct embroidery on the same garment. Customers calling a service company can ask, "Are you sending a master tech?" — and the shirt confirms the answer when the truck rolls up.
FR-Rated Apprentice Apparel
